The tag-document register is the single map of every engineering tag (instrument, equipment, line, valve) to every source document (P&ID, isometric, datasheet, HAZOP study, mill certificate, vendor data book) on a project, revision-tracked and queryable. Pathnovo extracts the tags, links them to source documents automatically, and maintains the register over the project lifecycle. Live with McDermott (10,247 tags across 600 P&IDs). The foundation of any modern Asset Information Management (AIM) deployment, audit-defensible, CFIHOS / ISO 15926 compliant.
Pathnovo's flagship reference engagement. Every tag from 600 P&IDs cross-mapped to every source document in the project archive. 99.5% measured field-level accuracy. Continuous revision-tracked maintenance over the engagement lifecycle.
Each instrument, equipment, line, valve, and pipe spool tag mapped to every P&ID, isometric, datasheet, line list, HAZOP node, mill certificate, and vendor data book that references it. Bidirectional traceability: tag-to-document and document-to-tag in one query.
Every tag, every revision, every source document version preserved. When a P&ID revision adds, deletes, or renames a tag, the register surfaces the change with full provenance. No orphan actions, no superseded references unnoticed.
Output mapped to CFIHOS class library and ISO 15926 reference data. The register drops directly into AVEVA AIM, Hexagon HxGN SDx, Bentley iTwin, Cognite Data Fusion, or any digital twin platform without remapping. Foundation for any modern AIM deployment.
First batch of structured tag-document register delivered within 48 hours of document upload. Volume tier scales to 50,000+ tags per project. Indian PSU rate-card compatibility available.
Click any tag in the register to see every source document that references it, including page-level location and source revision. Click any document to see every tag it contains. Audit teams (Chief Inspector of Boilers, MoPNG, OISD, PESO, CCOE, ASME stamping inspectors) get audit-ready evidence in real time.
Tags extracted from every document type Pathnovo handles: P&IDs (any format), isometrics, datasheets, line lists, equipment lists, HAZOP studies, mill certificates, vendor data books, MDR, transmittals, IBR Form IV, PESO Form XIV / XV.
Two indexes maintained simultaneously: tag → list of source documents (with page reference), and document → list of contained tags (with positional context). Query in either direction, drill from one to the other.
Every revision tracked with diff-level granularity: which tags were added, deleted, renamed, modified between Rev A and Rev B. Cross-link to /solutions/procurement-intelligence/pid-revision-po-impact for the procurement-impact analysis layer.
Same physical asset often appears with different tag conventions across documents (e.g. 'PT-101' on P&ID, 'PT 101' in datasheet, '101-PT' in instrument index). Pathnovo reconciles these variants automatically using project tag-naming rules.
Tags appearing in some documents but not others (e.g. an instrument tag on the P&ID with no datasheet reference). Surface gaps before HAZOP, before handover, before audit. Industry data shows 5-15% orphan rate at handover on typical EPC projects without managed services.
Register delivered in client-native handover format: CFIHOS class library, ISO 15926 RDF, SAP PM equipment master CSV, IBM Maximo asset register XML, AVEVA AIM data feed, Hexagon SDx2 schema, Wrench SmartProject MDR, or Excel / JSON / CSV. Custom client formats configured per project at no extra fee.
Build a complete tag-document register for an EPC handover from 30 years of legacy P&IDs and datasheets
Cross-validate that every instrument tag on the P&ID has a corresponding datasheet, line list entry, and instrument index row before HAZOP
Auto-detect orphan tags (P&ID-only, datasheet-only, HAZOP-only) before audit or handover
Maintain bidirectional traceability for IBR Form IV (every pressure-equipment tag mapped to mill cert + datasheet + P&ID + isometric)
Owner-operator multi-vendor consolidation: one tag-document register from multiple EPC contractors' incompatible deliverables
M&A due diligence: build a verified tag-document register from acquired-plant document archives
Brownfield digital twin foundation: feed iTwin, AIM, Cognite, or any twin platform with structured tag traceability
Continuous compliance: tag-document register automatically refreshed on every new document arrival, no manual maintenance
A tag-document register is a structured map of every engineering tag (instrument, equipment, line, valve) to every source document that references it (P&ID, isometric, datasheet, HAZOP study, mill certificate, vendor data book, MDR), revision-tracked and queryable. It is distinct from an MDR (Master Document Register), which lists documents only without tag traceability, and from an asset register, which lists tags only without document linkage. The tag-document register is the bidirectional index that makes both queryable together.
No. An MDR (Master Document Register) lists documents with metadata (number, title, revision, status, transmittal). A tag-document register additionally maps every tag in those documents to the documents that reference it. The MDR answers 'what documents do we have?'; the tag-document register answers 'which documents reference this specific tag?' Both are usually maintained side by side; the tag-document register depends on the MDR but adds the per-tag traceability that the MDR cannot provide.
Three reasons. First, audit defensibility: regulators (Chief Inspector of Boilers, MoPNG, OISD, PESO, CCOE, ASME stamping authorities) require provenance for every safety-critical tag from heat number through mill cert through datasheet through P&ID through HAZOP. Without tag-document traceability, every audit becomes a paper search. Second, change management: when a P&ID revision adds or removes a tag, every downstream document referencing that tag needs review; without a tag-document register, those downstream impacts are missed routinely. Third, handover quality: at EPC-to-owner-operator handover, the owner-operator needs to query 'show me everything you have on instrument PT-101', and that query needs to return P&ID + datasheet + line list + HAZOP + mill cert + vendor data book references in one shot. The MDR cannot do that.
Pathnovo extracts tags from every document type the project produces: P&IDs (any format, including scanned and PDF), isometrics, datasheets, line lists, equipment lists, HAZOP studies, mill certificates, vendor data books, MDR, transmittals. Each tag is captured with its positional context in the source document (page number, sheet ID, drawing region) and reconciled across documents using project tag-naming rules. The result is a bidirectional index: tag → list of source documents with page references, and document → list of contained tags. Updates happen continuously: every new document arrival triggers re-extraction and re-linking, so the register is current without manual maintenance.
99.5% measured field-level accuracy on the McDermott engagement (10,247 tags across 600 P&IDs). Accuracy is contractually backed with a remedy clause: re-process at no cost and credit the difference if accuracy slips. A per-tag audit trail is provided so any out-of-spec tag is traceable to its source document region for independent verification.
McDermott is Pathnovo's flagship live tag-document register engagement: 10,247 tags extracted across 600 P&IDs with 99.5% measured accuracy. Continuous revision-tracked maintenance over the engagement lifecycle. Detailed reference available under NDA on request; named outcomes available on /benchmarks (when published) and via direct sales conversation.
Pathnovo's output is CFIHOS 2.0 + ISO 15926 native, the standard formats AVEVA AIM, Hexagon HxGN SDx2, Bentley iTwin, and Cognite Data Fusion expect for handover. The register drops directly into any of these AIM platforms without remapping. For owner-operators with multi-vendor histories, Pathnovo extracts uniformly across all sources and feeds whichever AIM platform you have already chosen, no platform lock-in.

It bridges document control and asset management. Document control systems (Wrench SmartProject, Oracle Aconex, Bentley ProjectWise, OpenText Documentum) maintain MDR but cannot read documents to extract tags. Asset management systems (SAP PM, IBM Maximo, AVEVA AIM, Hexagon SDx2, Cognite) maintain asset register but cannot ingest from PDFs or scanned drawings. The tag-document register sits between them: it extracts tags from documents the EDMS manages, and feeds asset registers the AIM/CMMS maintains. Without it, every tag is queried by emailing the document control team and asking 'find me everything on PT-101', a process that takes hours per query and is incomplete most of the time.
McDermott is the proof that Pathnovo's tag-document register approach works at production EPC scale. 10,247 tags, 600 P&IDs, 99.5% measured accuracy, multiple revisions, live continuous maintenance. No competitor in the dataset (per Excel S2 + S3) has a comparable production engagement on tag-document register specifically. SmartPlant Foundation maintains tag-document linkage for SmartPlant-authored content only; AVEVA AIM does the same for AVEVA-authored. Pathnovo is the only managed service that builds the register from any source format, including legacy and third-party authored content, at McDermott scale. This is the strongest single strategic differentiator in Pathnovo's portfolio.
Every Indian regulatory regime depends on per-tag traceability. IBR Form IV requires every pressure-equipment tag mapped to its mill certificate, chemistry, mechanical properties, and Chief Inspector approval. OISD 118 HAZOP requires every action mapped to its current P&ID node (not the superseded one). PESO Form XIV / XV requires every hazardous-area device mapped to its compliance certificate. CCOE licence conditions reference specific equipment by tag. The tag-document register is the single source of truth for all four regimes simultaneously: extract once, satisfy four regulators. This is why Pathnovo bundles all four Indian regulatory views with the tag-document register output for Indian PSU + EPC clients.
AIM is the broader discipline; tag-document register is its data foundation. AIM platforms (AVEVA AIM, Hexagon HxGN SDx, Cognite Data Fusion, Bentley iTwin) provide storage, visualisation, query, and analytics on the asset register. They depend on a populated tag-document register for any of those features to be meaningful. Without it, the AIM platform is an empty database. With it, the AIM platform delivers the digital twin, predictive maintenance, change management, and regulatory query capabilities that justify its licensing cost. Pathnovo positions tag-document register as the foundational extraction layer that makes whichever AIM platform you've chosen actually work. See /solutions/asset-information-management for the broader pillar.
Owner-operators digitising legacy assets (Indian PSU refineries, Gulf NOCs, global O&G majors) needing brownfield asset register foundations. EPC contractors executing handover-driven projects (McDermott, GCKC, Zetwerk, L&T Hydrocarbon, Tata Projects, Petrofac, Toyo Engineering India, Larsen & Toubro Construction) where contractual handover deliverables include CFIHOS-aligned tag-document traceability. Multi-vendor owner-operators (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC, GAIL, Reliance, Adani) consolidating decades of EPC contractor deliverables into one queryable register. AVEVA AIM, Hexagon HxGN SDx, Bentley iTwin, and Cognite Data Fusion customers whose AIM implementations have stalled at the data ingestion phase, Pathnovo collapses that phase from 18-36 months to 12-20 weeks.
