Unlike OCR (which reads text) or EDMS (which stores files), document intelligence understands engineering context: tag relationships, process topology, safety classifications, and ISA 5.1 conventions.

Document management (EDMS) stores and retrieves files. Document intelligence reads those files and extracts structured data. An EDMS tells you which P&ID exists. Document intelligence tells you every tag, instrument loop, and safety classification on that P&ID — and delivers it into SAP PM.
